If you look at the powerhouse that is the SEC today, it began with Herschel Walker. Now to be clear, the conference existed before and had great players, had national champions, etc. But… the SEC was kind of looked at as Alabama plus whoever had the best other QB, and that wasn’t good enough to draw ratings or ad dollars. Back then, the money was all in Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Penn State and USC with an occasional sighting of Michigan and Ohio State. Herschel changed that, because he was must-see TV. If he was on TV, you were watching it. More eyes lead to more dollars lead to better facilities lead to better coaches lead to better football lead to better ratings etc. Now SEC QBs have advertising deals with private jet companies…. They should all send thank you notes to Herschel…. He was good in the pro level as well: over 13,000 yards from scrimmage, 82 TD, Pro Bowls, etc. But he changed college football forever.
